Let’s take a look at this heavy coffee table book by Martin Popoff – “Fade to black – Hard Rock Cover Art of the Vinyl Age”. This book is a visual journey 25 years of hard rock album cover art from 1965 to 1990, garnished with photography and publishing info as well as short background stories about the album or artist. It starts out with the Rolling Stones and ends up with a dose of Megadeath, so a variety of rock and metal is covered. If you don’t have these ol’ vinyls anymore it is the closest you get to enjoying the art of the album covers in a decent size (the book is a little over 1 foot tall) and not shrunk to a CD or iPod screen format. The only thing missing is the wonderful scent of new vinyl (hint hint – do a scrub that smello thing in the next edition). Our main complaints – make the book even bigger and include even more art. Hey, we can be greedy, right?
