Off to another review – here are our thoughts on Tom Keifer’s “The Way Life Goes” album, track by track:
1. Solid Ground
Great bluesy guitars, a Keifer trademark scream to open the song – could you ask for more? Tom surely stands his ground here in the veins of Black Crowes, but with his own personality and a message. The guitar work on this one is amazing – blazing balls on fire!
2. A Different Light
Yes, different – it shines a different light on one of the most distinctive voices in rock. Great contrast of acoustic guitars and a catchy hook…throw in a couple of neato effects and you got a solid track.
3. It’s Not Enough
We can’t get enough of this “clap your hands” rocker – well done! Greeeeeeaaaaatttttt work with many flavors of vocal goodness.
4. Cold Day In Hell
A harmonica and guitars crispy as the voices of angels, if you like your AOR and don’t like this one…you don’t like rock. Did we mention Tom Keifer sings on this one? It’s gonna be a cold day i hell before we delete this song from our rotation. Only minor gripe – the background vocals take away a tad too much from Tom’s voice.
5. Thick and thin
Holy something…the vocals are amazing on this power ballad (yes, I did just put that on a shelf together with 80’s metal). Should have published this in the heyday of the good ballads with guitars – would have made a trillion dollars.
6. Ask Me Yesterday
Our favorite track of the album. Man, acoustic guitar and that voice, you can’t go wrong. Make that a gazillion dollars for THIS ballad. 5 stars all the way.
7. Fool’s Paradise
A slow tempo-rocker with the Zepp’s attitude and combined with Aerosmith coolness. Great transitions – Thumbs up!
8. The Flower Song
Some more acoustic guitars that blend so well with the vocals – it reminds us a lot of a Rod Stewart summer song, in a good way!
9. Mood Elevator
Back to the heavier stuff with some good guitars. It falls a bit flat for us, not having a true highlight, but as Uncle Si would would say: “You can’t always have straight A’s, Jack”.
10. Welcome To My Mind
Now we are talking again…great mid-tempo rocker with a killer guitar!
11. You Showed Me
Back to a slower pace, phew – those key changes in there are killer. You’d never know it’s Tom Keifer in some parts…shows the versatility of him in a great, great way.
12. Ain’t That A Bitch
YEAAAAHHHH…Organs, Guitars, a raspy Voice! Life’s a bitch if you never listened to this chunky-funky rocker.
13. The Way Life Goes
Slow-tempo rocker (NOT a ballad!) with sexy guitars and vocals that suddenly turns into an up-tempo, foot tapping number. The tempo changes and use of brass make this a crossover between a bar song and a broadway show number. Well, that’s exaggerated but you will get the picture once you listen to it. If you don’t, well ain’t that the way life goes?
A great, rocking closer for the album. This is a rocking tune (with even a sax!) that grows on you with every listen!
